Last night, I embarked on a journey unlike any other, as I witnessed the UK premiere of “Spirited Away” at the illustrious London Coliseum. As a devout fan of Studio Ghibli, this theatrical adaptation was more than just a play—it was a transcendent experience.
A magnificent task
From its inception, “Spirited Away” has captivated audiences worldwide with its rich tapestry of storytelling, moral depth, and artistic vision. The film itself, a masterpiece of Japanese animation, served as my initiation into the enchanting realm of Ghibli, igniting a passion that has endured to this day.
Ghibli’s genius lies in its ability to push the boundaries of creativity, crafting worlds that are as intricate as they are mesmerizing. Each frame of their films is a testament to the painstaking craftsmanship and attention to detail that define the studio’s signature style. Bringing such a complex and beloved work to the stage was undoubtedly a Herculean task, but one that the visionary team behind this production executed with flawless precision.
Originally debuting in Japan in 2022 to widespread acclaim, the stage adaptation of “Spirited Away” embarked on a triumphant tour of the country, captivating audiences in cities such as Aichi, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Hokkaido. Building on this resounding success, the decision to transport the production to London was a bold yet inspired move, following in the footsteps of the smash hit “My Neighbor Totoro,” which has enraptured audiences at the Barbican for the past two years.
The production – the real star of the show
From the moment the curtains rose, it was evident that this production was something truly extraordinary. The seemingly simple set eventually uncovered itself to be a meticulously crafted universe teeming with life and magic. Each scene was brought to life with breathtaking detail, seamlessly transitioning between indoor scenes like the bath house and outdoor settings like the forest with an effortless grace that left me spellbound.
Accompanying this visual spectacle was a score that paid homage to the iconic music of the original film, transporting us back to the melodies that have become synonymous with “Spirited Away.” And yet, there were also moments of delightful surprise, as new musical numbers seamlessly interwoven with familiar themes, enriching the narrative and giving it a new life on the stage.
But perhaps the true pièce de résistance of this production lay in its costumes and puppetry. From the moment the characters graced the stage, adorned in intricately designed garments that seemed to breathe with a life of their own, I was utterly entranced. The puppetry, too, was nothing short of miraculous, as ethereal beings materialized before us, their movements imbued with a supernatural grace.
A “Significant cultural exchange”
The decision to present the play in its original Japanese language only served to deepen the immersive experience.
Not only did I journey to a world of kami and folklore, but I also had the privilege of immersing myself in the customs of Japanese culture – an enriching cultural exchange. Of course, no production is without its flaws, and I would be remiss not to mention the minor inconvenience of having to periodically glance at the subtitles. However, the fact that I was able to view the stage adaptation the same way I would advise any first time viewer to watch the film turned this into a triviality.
As the final curtain fell and the resounding applause filled the air, I found myself among a sea of fellow enthusiasts, united in our adoration for this unparalleled theatrical triumph. “Spirited Away” had not only surpassed my expectations but became an unforgettable experience in its own right—a testament to the enduring magic of Studio Ghibli.
