During my initial visit to Thailand, joining my friends on their incredible six-month backpacking journey across Southeast Asia became an irresistible opportunity. Eager to become a part of their Asian adventure, I chose Thailand as the destination to rendezvous with them. Among the many countries I could have chosen to join them, Thailand was a compelling choice due to its popularity among travellers. Since almost everyone and their aunts had explored Thailand, I was eager to join the bandwagon.
Ideally, my first choice would have been Bangkok or one of the picturesque islands for exploration. However, I had only a week to spare, and specific dates constrained my options. The boys had already planned to be in Chiang Mai and Pai during the time that aligned with my schedule. It was a bittersweet realization for me, as I had never heard of Chiang Mai or Pai before, and the fact that they were landlocked shattered the beachy image I associated with Thailand. Nevertheless, in retrospect, having traversed much of the country, Chiang Mai has become my favorite part of Thailand — the only place I would eagerly return to.
Chiang Mai holds a unique authenticity within Thailand, and its beauty is revered by both locals and domestic tourists who flock to this province for holidays. In contrast to other parts of the country where tourist expectations have overshadowed traditional culture and values, Chiang Mai remains distinctly Thai. It offers a genuine glimpse into Thai ideals, making it a refreshing deviation from the tourist-heavy areas. Having visited Phuket, Bangkok, and the Phi Phi Islands, I can confidently argue that Chiang Mai is the most diverse in terms of activities.
